Story Box Library Activity of the Month: June

Celebrate World Environment Day, with the story: Walk of the Whales, by Nick Bland.

3 big whales and 2 kids on bikes

When all of the whales in the ocean leave their home to walk around on land, people don’t quite know what to think. But soon shopkeepers go out of business, farms are flooded with water and salt, and people shout horrible, anti-whale words. That is, until a smart little girl decides to ask the whales what everyone can do to help.

A powerful and entertaining story about the environment from best-selling author, Nick Bland. Read by Tamala Shelton.

Celebrate World Environment Day, with this activity available from Story Box Library linked to the story: Walk of the Whales, written and illustrated by Nick Bland, performed by Tamala Shelton, and published by Hardie Grant Children’s Publishing.

Recycle bottle tops to create an artwork!

    What you need:

    • Plastic used bottle tops or lids
    • PVA glue or a glue gun
    • Cardboard

Collect an assortment of bottle tops or lids. Wash them well in warm water with soap.

  1. Arrange the tops - flat-side down, on a piece of cardboard to create a picture or pattern. You might like to: leave spaces to paint a picture or design, or group together similar colours or sizes.
  2. When you are happy with the design. Use a glue-gun (with an adult) to attach the tops to a thick piece of cardboard.
  3. Add any extra designs with paints or markers in the blank spaces left on the card.
