See a giant blue whale bone and a model of the redeveloped Canterbury Museum in a new display coming to Rangiora Library.
The whale bone featured in the exhibition is a large vertebra from Canterbury Museum’s much-loved blue whale skeleton. The whale, which will be suspended in the atrium of the new Museum after more than 30 years in storage, is one of the largest skeletons in any museum in the world. She was found dead on a beach near Ōkārito on Te Tai Poutini/West Coast in 1908. The blue whale vertebra is one of 63 bones that formed her spine. The display also features videos exploring the redeveloped Museum that will open in 2029. The Redevelopment Story Exhibition will be displayed at Rangiora Library from April 1.
