Leo's Book Den - Review of the week

Leo reviews the audiobook: Hide and don't seek (and other very scary stories); written by  Anica Mrose Rissi

book cover

“If you’re feeling brave, then turn the page. The first scare awaits you behind it.”

A collection of short stories set to make your skin crawl, your blood run chill, and your heart to race. From a haunted text message, a camping trip gone very, very wrong or a ghostly cat scratching on your wall, you’ll find every kind of thrill in this book.

The penultimate collection of “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” by Alvin Schwartz is a hard act to follow when it comes to children’s horror. And many collections, though they try, never quite make it to proper comparison. “Hide and Don’t Seek” by Anica Mrose Rissi however, not only reaches the same level of genius and quality, I believe she in many, many ways surpasses Schwartz.

Each story is told in a different format, from one completely in text messages, another in the form of a girl’s letters home to parents that grow increasingly frantic. Some are quick but absolutely chilling poems. Each story, save for two, are completely unique from the others, but Rissi masters each format.

The audiobook we offer on Overdrive is narrated chillingly by multiple performers, and is great to listen to on a long drive. The whole family can get a fright out of this one. Listen if you dare…
