Linda reviews: Change Sings: A children's anthem by Amanda Gorman
Change Sings: A children’s anthem by Amanda Gorman / illustrated by Loren Long
The story begins with a girl strumming a guitar “I can hear change humming”. We journey through the book as the girl gathers people to join her in spreading the word of “the change we sing”. They learn they are the voice of freedom and tolerance, and together they are a chorus for all to hear.
Amanda wrote this book because she believes every child has the ability to make a difference and see themselves as real agents of change. The text and illustrations demonstrate the change an individual makes within can have a positive impact on the world around them. Empowering others to have the courage to speak and act to treat the environment and each other with respect starts with the individual. The uncluttered illustrations fit perfectly to support the message that Amanda Gorman is conveying.
This powerful story is a great example that ‘picture books’ are not just for children. I can see this being enjoyed, studied and appreciated by those of any age.
I read this picture book, ‘Change Sings’ with Amanda’s lyrical voice in mind. Amanda Gorman is the youngest US presidential inaugural poet.
I look forward to seeing you in the picture book section of a library near you…
