The Life and  Times of a Rangiora Kid - Author Talk

Stories include tales from 1940’s school life, to hunting trips in Glentui to elephants parading down High Street!

Tom is 84, was a motor mechanic then a local paramedic before he retired. He is very involved with the Rangiora Museum and is keen for as much local history as possible to be recorded, especially people’s stories, which is why he wrote his. His story is from 1936 to the present and the Rangiora back then was very different to the present. It is humorous and a bit naughty.

For more information about the book here's the forward from Tom’s book:

During ones’ lifetime, so much has happened and so many stories of events that should be told come to mind and should be recorded.

In this book I have space for only a random selection from the chronicle of my life. I have had, and still have, so many friends and

acquaintances who have taught me so much and as you will read in this book, some have also provided me with a huge amount of amusement.

Probably the most fortuitous event of my life has been meeting Norma who became my wife, and from that time has been my guiding light in all matters. We have raised a wonderful family and are very happy together. In fact I would have to say that Norma has been “The Star of My Life.”

For many years Norma and I, on hearing people talking of memorable events in their lifetime, have advised them to “Get it written down.” Unfortunately this advice in most cases is just not heeded, or they lose their memory, or drop off the perch.

Then this valuable history is lost forever. Norma says my book has somewhat rude language that should be removed but my sons advise me to leave it as it is – be warned!

At the end of Tom’s book talk we will have David Petrie and Ann Jelfs from the Rangiora Museum to discuss what services the museum provide.
