Donna reviews: Pax by Sara Pennypacker

Pax by Sara Pennypacker

Pax by Sara Pennypacker

Pax is a fox who was rescued as a kit by his human, Peter. Pax and Peter are inseparable and become the best of friends until war is declared and Peter’s Dad enlists to fight. Now Peter has to go and live with his grandfather hundreds of miles away and Pax is left behind. Both the fox and his human set out on different journeys in a bid to be together once more.

I loved this story. There is so much packed into this small book. I couldn’t put it down. It is beautifully written and covers relationships between humans, animals and consequences of human behaviour. Peter rescued Pax at a time when he so needed someone to love and to love him in return. Peter’s relationship with an ex-soldier runs alongside Pax learning how to survive in the wild. Then, there is the underlying threat of the impending war, which slowly builds up a bit of background tension. I am now waiting to read the sequel “Pax: the journey home”.
