Jeanette's Review of The Deeper the Dead

Jeanette loves English/Scottish crime but this time she tried a New Zealand crime novel by Catherine Lea

Jeanette is holding a book next to a trolley in the Rangiora Library. There is then the cover of The Deeper the Dead by Catherine Lea imposed in the right hand corner.

I must state at the start, that I am very vocal of my love of English/Scottish crime.  I can reel off several authors and where their books are set (even better in places I have been in my favourite country).

However, I read this book, by a New Zealand author, Catherine Lea, who lives in Kerikeri and thought ‘this is quite readable’.  It is set in the Far North and even though the places are fictional, they can be relatable to areas.

It is a police procedural crime novel, that digs deeper than the surface.  It shows struggles, secrets, feuds, revenge and believable characters.  As Catherine Lea, says ‘the Far North is seen as tourism and beaches, but they don’t see the poverty and struggles.

The main character, Detective Inspector Nyree Bradshaw is struggling in this book.  She has guardianship of her granddaughter and is struggling to balance home and police work with a double homicide to solve.

I realised when I finished the book, it was Book 3 (the latest) in the DI Nyree Bradshaw series, so I have Books 1 and 2 to read!!
