Scary Stories for Young Foxes By Christian McKay Heidicker
Jr. Fiction
“’All scary stories have two sides,’ the storyteller said. ‘Like the bright and dark of the moon. If you’re brave enough to listen and wise enough to stay to the end, the stories can shine a light on the good in the world. They can guide your muzzles. They can help you survive.’”
Seven little foxes meet the Storyteller, who promises them stories so scary that if they stay till the end their tails will turn white. Seven stories are told, and 6 fox kits run home, unable to bear them. The final fox kit though, will they make it? And what do these stories actually mean? And…were they true…?
This book is perfect for kids who want a good scary story, but are perhaps too young for R.L Stien or Alvan Schwatrz. These seven tales intertwine and flow with one another to unlock a main plot that ties everything together in a perfect bow. This kind of storytelling is one I rarely see in Jr. fiction, but I’m so here for it. I love the direction of the main characters being foxes, with their own world and sets of rules and dynamics. The illustrations are creepy and haunting, but incredibly provoking and draw you in and keep you on your toes. An absolutely brilliant book, and perfect for parents to read along with! Trust me, this is a great spooky read for all ages.
