This month Sarah and Ciaran our movie experts reviewed: Emily
Available on DVD and Kanopy
Sarah:
4 stars
Emma Mackay provides a very engaging performance in this imagining of the author Emily Brontë’s life. Although there seems to be little definitive historical proof about what, if any, romantic connections Emily Brontë had, it really doesn’t matter in the context of enjoying this story. Her relationships with her family and with the local curate as portrayed in the movie are more than complex enough to be interesting, and the scenery and historical setting make for wonderful viewing. If you find yourself wanting to read or re-read Wuthering Heights, Emily Brontë’s only novel, after watching this movie, the library does have a number of copies available.
Ciaran:
3.5 stars
Emily is that faraway sort of period biopic that feels almost fantastical at times. The sweeping vistas that feel bold, ancient and endlessly beautiful are just a flavour of the camera work at play. This film wasn’t always the most reliable narrator, as Emily Brontë fails to be defined by something so base as a linear narrative. I admired that this film made the audience look outwardly and inwardly at Emily Brontë, both the way she thought and how creativity stemmed from her. Sarah is right; Emma Mackay’s performance is engaging. It might well be the truly shining quality of this film
