Summer Reading Challenge 2024/25

We are excited to have you join us on our travels around the world with the Waimakariri Libraries Summer Reading Challenge!

Tēnā koutou katoa, and welcome aboard the Waimakariri Libraries Summer Reading Challenge for 2024, where your journey will take you around the world!

Collect your Summer Reading Passport from your local library and join our frequent reader scheme. Complete the challenges in your passport and go in the draw to win some fabulous prizes!

The Summer Reading Challenge runs from

5 December 2024 - 26 January 2025

HOW IT WORKS

  1. Pick up your Summer Reading Passport from any Waimakariri Library from 5 December 2024.

    Get a head-start and come to our special sign-up days! 

    Thursday, 5 Dec – Kaiapoi Library 3-7 pm, Oxford Library 3-4:30 pm

    Friday, 6 Dec – Rangiora Library 3-7 pm

    Weekend of 7 & 8 Dec – all libraries during their normal opening hours

    Tuesday, 10 Dec – Oxford Library, 3-5 pm

  1. Complete your challenges – 5 for the chance to win a goodie bag, 10 or more to go in the draw for the grand prizes. There will be an additional prize up for grabs for super readers who complete all 15 challenges.

    Pakeke | Adults  -  $100 New World voucher
    Rangatahi | Teens - $100 Iron Knight Gaming voucher 
    Tamaririki | Children - $100 Emmas at Oxford Book store voucher 
    Kōhungahunga | Preschoolers -  $50 Emmas at Oxford Book store voucher
  1. Take your passport to a member of staff by 26 January 2024 to go into the draw.
  1. When you pick up a Reading Passport for your child, don't forget to pick one up for you, too! Taking part in this challenge is great role-modelling for your child and will encourage them to complete the challenge.

We will have displays with plenty of reading suggestions for the challenges across our three libraries and will email you updates and recommendations throughout the challenge to keep you going 😊

eBooks & eAudiobooks from Across the Globe

Read eBooks and listen to eAudiobooks for all ages on BorrowBox or Libby.

Storybox Library allows storytime to be anytime! Watch and listen to some of your favourite stories being read by Australian and New Zealand storytellers! Reading aloud to children, in particular by diverse and engaging storytellers, greatly improves language and literacy skills, especially in the early years of a child’s development.

International eMagazines and eComics 

Libby also provides access to popular magazines and has a great range of eComics which are yours to download and keep.

Watch Movies and Series from Around the World

Kanopy has over 10,000 titles and with new content added monthly there is something here for everyone! Kanopy Kids provides specific content for children with unlimited access to a diverse selection of educational and entertaining content - from movies, TV series, animated storybooks, to live action, and animated favourites!

Dive into Other Languages

LOTE4Kids has over 3000+ online picture books for kids in 65+ languages, including Te Reo Māori and New Zealand Sign Language. Each picture book is read aloud and is paired with an English language version.

Mango Languages provides access to over 70 languages including Chinese (Mandarin & Cantonese), French, Italian and Japanese. It also contains lessons for people wanting to learn English.

Sing Along to Your Favourite Tunes

Freegal Music+ is a free music service which offers download or streaming access to more than 18 million songs including Sony Music’s catalog of legendary artists. In total, the collection is comprised of 200 genres of music from over 100 countries.

Learn More About the World

Developed specifically for libraries, the new Britannica Library provides you with top quality information from a trusted source.

Access three sites in one, with age appropriate material from the child-friendly collection through to the adult general reference collection. Now students of all ages will find it easy to conduct research, complete homework assignments and work on special projects.

New Zealand Geographic has awesome articles, documentaries and information about the people, places and wildlife of New Zealand and surrounding areas, like Antarctica.
