3D Printing

Our 3D printing service is available for anyone— even non-library members.

3D printing involves making a 3D object by heating and layering many thin layers of filament.

The Tinker Zone has one 3D printer, called ‘Cryten’. Cryten is a Creality K1 Max 3D printer which uses Kiwifil 1.75mm PLA filament (polylactic acid).

Tinker Zone runs using a Traffic Light system. The 3D printer is a Red Tech, which means that the 3D printer itself can only be used by Tinker Zone staff. However, there are iPads and library Chromebooks available to use for 3D modelling at any time the library is open.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any costs?

Some technologies have costs for materials, while others are free to use. The 3D printer costs $0.20 per gram of filament used.

Check out our full list of Tinker Zone Costs here, or visit the website page for the specific tech you’re interested in.

Can I use the 3D Printer while I'm in the library?

Unfortunately 3D printing is only available through our 3D printing form due to complex health and safety requirements, and the level of expertise required to handle the 3D printer safely.

However, we have iPads available to use to practise 3D modelling during your library visit.
